Adding onto Your Home? Consider a Ductless Mini-Split
Adding onto your Stockbridge, Georgia home gives you more space and flexibility. However, addons often present indoor climate control issues. An existing central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system may not be powerful enough to provide conditioned air to more space. Some add-ons are hard to connect to an existing duct system.Ductless mini-split systems solve the problem. They are available as air conditioning units or as heat pumps that heat and cool.
Ductless Mini-Splits Defined
Ductless heat pumps and air conditioners operate on the same principles as ducted systems with one major difference. Unlike central HVAC systems that distribute conditioned air through ducts into the living space, ductless systems do not require ducts to deliver conditioned air into a space. Instead, an outdoor compressor connects to an indoor air handler by a conduit routed through a small opening in a wall. The conduit contains electrical wiring, refrigerant tubing, and condensate lines.
Depending on the model you select, one compressor can run up to eight indoor air handlers. Air handlers are installed on the ceiling, high on a wall, or on the floor. Individual remote controls allow temperature adjustment for each space. Switching the unit off when not in use saves electricity without affecting comfort in other rooms.
Advantages of Mini-Split Systems
There are several advantages to ductless systems:
- Ease of installation
- Energy-efficient, saving money and energy
- Better indoor air quality because air is not transferred between spaces
- Precise climate control of each room or zone
- Outdoor units can be placed to minimize noise and visual impact
- Quiet operation of indoor units
Ductless systems are a great choice for addons, older homes without ductwork, and spaces that are difficult to heat and cool, such as sunrooms and garages. According to the Department of Energy, ducted systems lose up to 30% of conditioned air through leaks and holes. In contrast, ductless systems do not lose energy because there are no ducts.
